Vintage: 2022
Appelation: Californa
Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc
The 2022 Sidekick Sauvignon Blanc was sourced entirely from vineyards in Lodi farmed by the Kautz family. These fourth generation farmers have been growing grapes in Lodi since 1920 and were the first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the Mokelumne River sub-AVA of Lodi. Sustainably farmed, these vineyards in the South West portion of Lodi benefit from the strong coastal breezes that flow in from the delta water system to the west. Sandy sedimentary soils and strong bay winds help this Sauvignon Blanc retain good acid and aromatics. To further maintain freshness, a portion of the wine is fermented as reductively as possible. This is done by harvesting at night and doing a small SO2 addition in the vineyard before picking to protect the grapes from oxidation. Free run juice from the press is separated and fermented separately. Fermentation is 14-21 days depending on the lot and all done in stainless steel. The wine is prevented from completing malolactic fermentation to further retain freshness. It is then allowed to settle for six months before final blending and bottling.
